Sponsored Book Review: Alex Asks About Auntie's Airplane Day

Recently, I was invited to review a "diversity" book for children.  You know how I love exploring and introducing diversity through picture books, so I jumped at the chance and checked all the boxes that applied to our family.  I was provided with this little easy reader by Carolyn Wilhelm about celebrating an Adoption Day.

The first thing that jumped out at me is that 4 pages out of the 27 were focused on Aunt Betsy's adoption.  They were great pages with age-appropriate information about adoption and cultural differences.  I wished that "put up for adoption" was tweaked to the more positive language, and we personally feel that "Gotcha Day" is insensitive, though I know many other families do celebrate it, and I liked how the family in the book called it "Airplane Day", in remembrance of Betsy's travel on an airplane to come join their family.  My main beef is that the majority of the plot focused around a flat tire on the protagonist's way to the Adoption Day party, and I was hoping that it was foreshadowing something or would somehow be related to the story, but it just wasn't.

Now, from a different perspective, my 11yo son, the Nugget, thought the book was fantastic.  He liked the thrill of the flat tire story and appreciated reading about how my adoption was similar to Aunt Betsy's vs. his domestic open adoption.  It sparked some good adoption conversation.  He also liked the photo of Betsy and Carolyn on the last page.
